MGS Master Collection Vol. 2: Switch 2 Hits 60fps, Original Switch

HG Staff

A month before launch, Konami finally confirmed what handheld players suspected: Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 runs at fundamentally different performance tiers depending on which Nintendo device you’re holding. Switch 2 owners get 60fps across both MGS4 and Peace Walker, in handheld and docked modes alike. Original Switch owners get 30fps, full stop.

That 60fps cap on Switch 2 isn’t locked — Konami warns of dips during heavy effects and cutscenes, a fair concession to the thermal and power ceiling of a mobile chipset pushing a PS3-era technical showcase. Even so, 60fps in handheld mode means MGS4’s stealth timing and reflex-heavy boss fights operate at double the visual information rate of the original Switch version. The difference between 30 and 60 frames per second in a game built around split-second alert phases and CQC counters is not academic — it affects how the game plays.

Resolution splits tell the same generational story across ports like Xenoblade Chronicles 2. On Switch 2, MGS4 outputs 1080p in handheld and up to 4K docked with a selectable ‘Adjusted’ mode. The original Switch maxes at 720p handheld and 1080p docked. Peace Walker on Switch 2 offers a ‘High Resolution’ mode topping 1080p in both modes, versus the Switch’s 720p cap. Bonus content climbs from 720p to 1080p on the newer hardware, keeping pace with the resolution targets of Final Fantasy X HD on Switch 2. Storage reflects the asset upgrade: MGS4 requires 26GB on Switch 2 versus 20GB on original Switch.

The practical takeaway for anyone deciding which version to buy: Switch 2 owners can toggle between ‘Original’ and ‘Adjusted’ or ‘High Resolution’ modes, while original Switch owners get the defaults as-is. Master Collection Vol. 2 lands August 27, and this spec sheet makes the choice straightforward — the Switch 2 version is the handheld experience worth waiting for, especially with current discounts on MGS collection deals making the upgrade more affordable.
