MGS Vol. 2 on Switch 2 Is 28GB Smaller Than the Switch Version

HG Staff

Elden Ring Tarnished Edition needs 50.0GB on Switch 2. Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 needs 21.9GB on Switch 2—and 50.2GB on the original Switch. Those numbers, pulled from eShop listings in North America, Europe, and Japan, are the clearest picture yet of what storage management will look like on Nintendo’s new hardware.

For handheld players, file size isn’t a footnote. It determines which games live on internal storage, which get shuttled to a microSD card, and whether a download fits before a trip. The Switch 2 roundup has a predictable AAA heavyweight and one genuinely surprising inversion.

Elden Ring’s 50GB Asks a Question 256GB Can’t Dodge

The Tarnished Edition landing at exactly 50.0GB puts FromSoftware’s open world in the same storage tier as the PlayStation and Xbox versions. On a 256GB Switch 2, that’s roughly a fifth of the drive before patches, save data, or screenshots. If you also want to keep a handful of other games installed, you’ll be making microSD Express card decisions on day one. The practical takeaway: treat Elden Ring as a ‘pick one big game at a time’ purchase unless expandable storage is already in the budget.

The 28.3GB Gap That Flips the Upgrade Narrative

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 is the oddity. The Switch 2 version checks in at 21.9GB, while the Switch version demands 50.2GB—28.3GB more for the older platform. That’s the opposite of the usual pattern where a newer console edition balloons to accommodate 4K textures and uncompressed audio.

The listings don’t explain the gap, and it’s possible the two SKUs differ in included content. But if the Switch 2 listing reflects a genuinely leaner build, it’s a reminder that improved hardware can also mean better compression—and that’s a win for handheld storage. Either way, 50.2GB is a heavy footprint for a Switch release.
