Big Walk Snubs Xbox: Switch 2 Wins, Game Pass Loses

HG Staff

House House have confirmed what the platform list already implied: Big Walk is coming to PC, PS5, and Switch 2, and it is not coming to Xbox — a decision the Melbourne studio ties directly to its support for the BDS movement’s Microsoft boycott, called in 2025 over Microsoft’s business ties with the Israeli military. The Untitled Goose Game developers say they would love the co-op puzzler on Xbox, “but not until Microsoft and/or Xbox have been removed as BDS boycott targets.”

For handheld players the practical read is short: Switch 2 and Steam Deck — plus every Windows handheld that can run the PC build — get Big Walk. Nobody playing through Xbox cloud streaming, or hoping for a day-one Game Pass PC drop, gets anything. That second part is where portable players should pay closest attention, because Game Pass has quietly become the single biggest selling point for Windows handhelds.

Game Pass PC Is Windows Handhelds’ Killer App — and It Just Took a Hit

For ROG Ally and Legion Go owners, the ROG Ally’s bundled Game Pass subscription is doing a lot of work that internal storage cannot: it is the reason a 512GB handheld feels like a library instead of a shelf. Every high-profile indie that stays off Xbox is also staying off Game Pass, at least on console, and that erodes the one advantage Windows handhelds have over the Deck that Valve cannot replicate.

House House have not detailed which PC storefronts Big Walk will use. But a studio publicly divesting from Microsoft hardware and services is not going to route its PC release through the Microsoft Store, which means the PC build almost certainly will not land on Game Pass PC either. If you bought a Windows handheld primarily as a subscription machine, this is the shape of the trade-off: the catalogue keeps growing, but not with titles that have a reason to say no.

The Real Casualty Is the Friend Group, and Cross-Play Can’t Patch It

“Some people will miss out on playing Big Walk with their friends,” House House wrote, and that sentence is the whole design problem in miniature. Big Walk is a cooperative hike built on the assumption that everyone you want to play with can actually join. If cross-play covers Steam Deck, Switch 2, PS5, and PC, most groups are fine — you bring whatever handheld you own and nobody notices. But a friend whose only gaming hardware is an Xbox, or whose handheld setup runs entirely through Game Pass streaming, is stranded with no workaround, and no amount of cross-play engineering fixes a platform that does not exist.

That is the concrete takeaway for anyone planning a group buy: PC is the platform that keeps your options open. The same build runs on Deck, Ally, and Legion Go, it is not dependent on a storefront’s relationship with a developer’s conscience, and it will still be there if the boycott expands or contracts. Switch 2 is the better couch machine if your group is local. Xbox is the one path with nothing at the end of it — and this is now the second time portable players have watched a high-profile indie decision quietly reshape which handheld is the right buy.
