Valheim 1.0's 160K Player Surge Is a Big Handheld Moment

HG Staff

Valheim’s 1.0 exit has pulled 160,000 concurrent players back to Steam, its strongest number since April 2021. The old early-access peak of 502,387 still towers above it, but that comparison doesn’t account for what changed: the full Viking survival sim is now on Switch 2, PlayStation and Xbox, meaning Steam is no longer the only crowd that matters.

For handheld owners, the number worth chasing isn’t the concurrent-player graph. Valheim 1.0 arrives with roughly 1,800 words of patch notes, including the Deep North biome, over 40 new weapons and a draw-distance setting — and the same update is now in Steam Deck libraries while Switch 2 players get the complete game for the first time.

Steam’s Chart Is No Longer Valheim’s Only Crowd

A single Steam concurrent-player line no longer tells the full story. The 502,387 early-access peak happened when PC was the only battlefield; today’s 160,000 is still the game’s best Steam showing in five years, but the rest of the audience is spread across PlayStation, Xbox, Switch 2 and PC. That split is exactly why the old record won’t fall — not because Valheim faded, but because Iron Gate finally has a console base it never had before.

Switch 2 owners get the novelty factor: a full 1.0 Viking survival sandbox in a hybrid form factor. Steam Deck owners get the update downloaded into the same library they’ve had for years. Both are handheld wins, even if neither shows up on Valve’s public chart.

Deep North’s Draw-Distance Setting Is the Portable Trap

Deep North and 40-plus weapons are the easy selling points, but the 1.0 graphics change is the one to watch on Deck and Switch 2. A draw-distance setting sounds like PC convenience, yet Valheim’s procedural terrain generation leans heavily on the CPU. On a handheld APU, stretching that slider makes distant biomes render while frametimes take the hit. There are no official portable performance targets in the launch notes, so don’t assume max settings is a safe default.

My advice: leave draw distance at default or one notch above it, play through a few Deep North storms, then decide if the extra vista is worth the APU cost. The genuinely good news is that the five-year wait ended with a massive content drop — and handheld players get to judge it on their own screens.
