Steam Deck Beta Fixes Browser Scrolling and Remote Play Black Screen

The left trackpad on Steam Deck just got a job it should have had years ago: Valve’s latest Beta client binds it to the scroll wheel in the built-in web browser, turning a cursor-drag slog into something that actually feels like browsing. The same update fixes a single-pixel line above the home screen header, restores proper key input in Steam Overlay in Desktop Mode, and patches a Remote Play case that would show a black window.

None of these are headline features, and that’s exactly why they’re worth a closer look. The Deck’s browser has long been the weakest part of SteamOS, and the left trackpad — so good at precision mouse work — was almost useless for the simple act of scrolling a page. These fixes may be small, but they target the day-to-day friction that no spec sheet ever mentions.

The Left Trackpad Is Now a Scroll Wheel — Long Overdue

Binding the left trackpad to scroll matters if you’ve ever tried to open a wiki page, check a mod guide, or log into a storefront on Deck. Browsing non-Steam websites previously meant dragging a cursor to a scrollbar or swiping a trackpad that wasn’t set up for momentum — workable, but a constant reminder that the built-in browser isn’t Chrome. Valve’s fix turns the left pad into a scroll wheel, and the same binding applies to Steam Controller, giving anyone still using Valve’s enduring pad a reason to update too.

Desktop Mode’s overlay key fix quietly matters as well — one more restoration in a client that’s been rebuilding missing options. A keyboard that misses certain keys in Steam Overlay is the kind of bug that makes chat and search feel broken in an environment where the Deck is already doing desktop-style work. The Remote Play black window fix, meanwhile, is directly relevant to anyone streaming from a gaming PC to the handheld across the house. Black screen cases have been a recurring Remote Play annoyance for years — the same feature that just gained HDR in beta on Deck OLED — and each one Valve closes makes streaming on Deck more dependable. The takeaway: this beta isn’t about flashy features — it’s Valve cleaning up the edges that make SteamOS feel unfinished. Opt in from System Settings if you want the fixes now, and if trackpad scrolling was your excuse to avoid the Deck browser, that excuse just died.
