Soma's Switch 2 Edition: A Deep Dive into Portable Horror Upgrade
Frictional Games’ Soma always carried a clear trade-off on Nintendo Switch: portability at the cost of visual fidelity. That compromise has been erased. A new Switch 2 Edition has rolled out with a suite of technical upgrades that sharpen the underwater horror without asking players to buy the game again. For most regions, it is a free update.
What the Upgrade Changes on a Small Screen
The original Switch port of Soma held together in tight corridors but buckled in the game’s larger underwater environments, where resolution dropped and frame pacing faltered. The Switch 2 Edition targets all three weak points: higher render resolution, a stable frame rate, increased draw distance, and markedly faster loading times. On a handheld screen, the improved draw distance is the most consequential change. In Soma’s claustrophobic depths, seeing a creature or environmental cue a few meters earlier can mean the difference between a planned approach and a panicked scramble. Faster loading also matters—Soma kills players often, and cutting the black-screen pause between attempts keeps the tension rolling during a commute or a quick session before bed.
The Price of the Upgrade
Publisher Abylight confirmed the Switch 2 Edition is free for anyone who owns the original Switch version, with one exception: Japan, where a 100 yen fee (roughly $0.70) applies. The upgrade includes improved image quality, higher-quality textures, greater draw distance, and faster loading times—all the enhancements teased last year. A new trailer highlights the visual leap, particularly in lighting and environmental detail. For new buyers, the edition carries the standard retail price. In an era where next-gen upgrades often carry a $10 to $20 price tag, this is a notable exception—and a signal that Switch 2 ports can deliver meaningfully better handheld experiences without charging owners twice.
