Switch 2 Sale: SEGA/Atlus Cuts Sonic Mania, Virtua Fighter 5 Prices
SEGA and Atlus have flipped the eShop discount switch on Switch 2 and Switch, and the early list reads like a handheld essentials haul: Sonic Mania, Virtua Fighter 5, and more at fresh price lows. For anyone who’s been waiting for a reason to fill out their digital library, this sale is it.
The two headline games couldn’t be more different, but both are exceptional in portable mode. Sonic Mania is a masterclass in quick, satisfying platforming, while Virtua Fighter 5 is a fighting game that doesn’t demand a big screen or a fight stick. And with the promise of more SEGA and Atlus titles likely riding along, this is a good week to check what’s new on the Nintendo store. It’s the latest in a summer of publisher Switch sales hitting new lows, after Bandai Namco’s cuts on Tales and Little Nightmares 3 — and Koei Tecmo’s own on Fatal Frame 2 and Wild Hearts S.
Sonic Mania and Virtua Fighter 5: A Portable Odd Couple
Start with Sonic Mania, which remains the gold standard for 2D platformers on any screen. Its tight physics, memorable zones, and forgiving (but not easy) difficulty mean it’s perfect for squeezing in a few Acts while waiting for a train or during a lunch break. On Switch, it runs at a rock-solid 60fps in both docked and handheld, and the pick-up-and-put-down flow is exactly what a portable game should be. At a new low price, there’s zero reason to keep passing on it.
Virtua Fighter 5 is the counterweight: a 3D fighter that thrives on quick, decisive matches. The Switch version’s clean visuals and readable HUD translate well to a smaller display, and because matches rarely drag past a couple of minutes, it’s a natural fit for on-the-go ranked play. You won’t find the depth of a story mode here, but for arcade-style bouts, it’s tough to beat. If you want a physical copy instead of downloading, Sonic Mania on Amazon is an option, but the eShop sale price is the reason to strike now.
