Onimusha's 1M Debut Puts Switch 2 in the Day-One Club

Onimusha: Way of the Sword didn’t sneak back after a 20-plus-year absence; it opened with one million sales on day one. Capcom confirmed the milestone across PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2, while Steam hit 85,081 concurrent players and the game climbed into the platform’s bestsellers.

For handheld owners, the more revealing fact sits beside that sales number: Switch 2 was in the day-one lineup. This isn’t a late port or a ‘wait for it’ promise. Capcom brought a deliberately crafted action revival to Nintendo’s hybrid at the same moment as every major platform, and that changes what the series’ comeback means for portable players.

A Day-One Seat for Switch 2 Isn’t a Bonus Anymore

Capcom moved Way of the Sword’s release forward from 25th September to 4th September. That is not a move a publisher makes when the Switch 2 version is a rushed afterthought; it is a signal that the hybrid build carried enough weight to join the global launch. One million units in a day and a 10-million lifetime total for the Onimusha series says the audience was ready, and day-one hybrid availability is part of why this revival feels current instead of archival.

Eurogamer’s review highlights a deep swordplay game that skips common Soulslike tropes. For handheld players, that design direction can make a meaningful difference: a game not built on long punishment loops is easier to drop into for a short session. But that is an experience argument, not a technical one.

Steam Deck Gets a Launch Title, Not a Performance Promise

Steam’s 85,081 peak is big enough to make Way of the Sword one of the platform’s current bestsellers. For Steam Deck players, that puts the game in the storefront they use every day, but it is not a compatibility promise. The sales announcement says nothing about portable-mode resolution, battery estimates, or a Steam Deck verified badge. Treat those as open questions.

What the launch does establish is momentum. A dormant Capcom series came back, sold a million copies in 24 hours, and did it while Switch 2 and Steam were both part of the opening pitch. Now the publisher owes portable players the technical specifics that turn a great first-day story into a portable one.
