Modern Warfare 4 Beta Drops on Switch 2 – A Handheld Milestone
Activision is bringing Call of Duty back to Nintendo hardware with actual silicon this time. Modern Warfare 4’s open beta will include Switch 2 alongside PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S — natively, for the first time in franchise history. The beta schedule, announced alongside the return of Call of Duty: Next, marks the moment handheld FPS stops being an oxymoron.
The Native Difference: Why This Beta Signals More Than Parity
Past Call of Duty on Nintendo meant cloud streaming or belated Warzone ports, but id Software’s Doom on Switch and Steam Deck proved native FPS was possible on modest hardware. Modern Warfare 4 on Switch 2 is native, built on Infinity Ward’s latest engine and running on Nintendo’s custom Nvidia chipset. The open beta runs August 28 through September 1, with pre-orders going live August 26 — a tight two-day window to secure access. Nineteen weapons across maps ranging from close-quarters 3v3 arenas to vehicle-heavy battlefields will give Switch 2 owners their first genuine cross-platform Call of Duty experience. The real question is framerate and battery. Steam Deck chews through Warzone 2.0 at alarming power draw—similar to the performance struggles Halo faced—and the Switch 2 will need its DLSS-like upscaling to balance visual fidelity with playable frame rates on a 7-inch screen. Expect resolution compromises in handheld mode, but native parity over cloud streaming is already a decisive win.
Kill Block and the Speed Problem for Wireless Players
A new mode called Kill Block joins the classic Search & Destroy rotation, and a Training Mobility Course will test players on slide-cancels and bunny hops that have already split the Call of Duty community. That speed carries specific stakes for handheld players: faster movement curves amplify input latency over wireless controllers, and no amount of skill compensates for a Bluetooth polling gap. The closed beta runs August 21–25 but excludes Switch 2 entirely — handheld players will have to wait for the open beta to get hands-on. Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23 across all platforms simultaneously, and for the first time, handheld players won’t be stuck waiting for a separate port or a cloud workaround.
