Miyamoto Reveals Star Fox, Yoshi Games Born from Mario Movie Plans

HG Staff

Miyamoto confirmed in Famitsu that two upcoming Switch 2 games — the Star Fox remake and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book — were greenlit because their characters appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, marking a shift from Nintendo’s usual ‘fun first’ development approach. “We have an idea to include Fox in the script for the movie, so we definitely want a new Star Fox game,” Miyamoto explained. Yoshi’s planned movie appearance similarly triggered Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.

This movie-first sequencing has direct implications for handheld players. Instead of game concepts driving the release calendar, Nintendo is now aligning software launches with film release windows. That means tighter, more deliberate scheduling for Switch 2 titles — and games designed for broader appeal that play well on a portable display. The Princess Peach Showtime precedent reinforces the pattern: it was developed concurrently with The Super Mario Bros. Movie to ensure character consistency across mediums.

For Switch 2 owners, the upside is polished companion titles that launch alongside major film releases rather than rushed movie tie-ins. Nintendo is synchronizing production schedules, not licensing out IP. The downside is that original concepts may take a back seat to cross-media synergy. If every major franchise appearance on screen demands a corresponding game, the Switch 2 library risks becoming a catalog of cinematic companions rather than hardware-driven experimentation. The Star Fox remake and Yoshi’s new title — alongside the Star Fox Challenge Mode analysis already available — will show whether that trade-off produces better games or just better-aligned release dates.
