Switch 2’s June Sales Dip: Star Fox and FF7 Rebirth Debut to Modest

The Switch 2 launch hype has officially cooled in Japan. Famitsu’s June 2026 sales data shows Nintendo’s new handheld sold just 100,166 units — an 86% drop from May’s 711,911. That price hike bit hard, and the software charts reflect a market still waiting for a killer app. Star Fox landed third at 41,680 copies, while Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth barely cracked 40,000. For handheld gamers, this isn’t a crisis — yet — but it’s a clear signal that the Switch 2’s first-party lineup needs to find its rhythm fast.

Portable Powerhouses at Half-Mast

Star Fox and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth are exactly the kind of marquee titles that should move hardware. That neither cleared 50,000 retail units suggests the early adopter pool has already been tapped. For Switch 2 owners, the bright side is that both games are built for portable play: Star Fox’s arcade pacing maps well to short sessions, and Rebirth’s open zones benefit from the system’s improved GPU for stable framerates on the go. But the numbers say the mass market isn’t biting yet. Nintendo needs a Tomodachi Life-level phenomenon on Switch 2 — not a port of a 2024 PS5 game, even one as good as Rebirth.

Hardware Cliff: From Frenzy to Normal

The 86% month-over-month drop in Switch 2 hardware sales is dramatic, but not unprecedented. Nintendo deliberately raised the price after launch, and supply has caught up with demand. For handheld-focused readers, this is actually good news: it means you can walk into a store and grab a unit without a pre-order lottery. The real test will be the holiday quarter. If Nintendo doesn’t deliver a true system-seller — think a new 3D Mario or a Pokémon that fully leverages the upgraded specs — that 100,000 figure could become the new normal. Square Enix will hope Rebirth sees legs through digital sales, but the physical chart tells the story: portable gamers are being patient.
