Hyperkin SupaBoy Gets Retro-Inspired Crimson and Prime Colorways

Hyperkin knows exactly who it’s selling to. Fifteen years after the original SupaBoy launched, the company is refreshing the cartridge-playing SupaBoy handheld with two new colorways: Crimson and Prime. Both are direct nods to Nintendo’s 16-bit legacy. Crimson adopts a transparent red shell with gold-accented buttons—pure Super Famicom homage. Prime uses a clear shell with the multicolored face buttons of the original SNES controller. The hardware hasn’t changed—it still runs on four AA batteries and plays original cartridges on a 4.3-inch screen—so Hyperkin is betting that the allure of physical media and authentic hardware still holds weight in a market dominated by emulation boxes and PC handhelds.

Transparent Shells and Tactile Authenticity

The translucency trend has never died in the retro handheld space, and both SupaBoy variants lean hard into it, offering a window straight to the circuit board. For handheld enthusiasts, this refresh isn’t about specs—it’s about the tactile experience of sliding a real cartridge into a real slot instead of navigating a ROM menu. In an era where a Steam Deck can emulate anything, Hyperkin is betting that a non-trivial audience still wants the weight, the insertion click, and the battery compromise of original hardware. The clear shell variants make that philosophy visible, literally.

Hands-On at Classic Game Fest, Release This Fall

Hyperkin will debut both units in person at Classic Game Fest in Austin, Texas (July 24–26, Booth #6). Pricing is still unannounced, but the company confirmed a “Fall 2026” window. Given that the current SupaBoy model dates back to 2018 without a hardware revision, these colors are a low-risk, high-nostalgia way to surface the device for a new audience. The SupaBoy remains a specialized tool—clamshell-like form factor, 4.3-inch screen, SNES/SFC cartridge slot—not a general-purpose emulation machine. For collectors who value authenticity over flexibility, either Crimson or Prime is the nudge they’ve been waiting for.
