Switch 2 Exclusive's Server Meltdown Strands Handheld Fans

The Duskbloods closed network test was supposed to be FromSoftware’s grand debut on Switch 2. Instead, it’s become a screenshot of millions of players staring at a logo. Within an hour of the first four-hour slot going live, the servers were saturated, and the company was publicly apologizing while players traded ‘let me in’ memes. For a game explicitly built for online play, this is the worst possible first date — and the sting is sharpest for the handheld audience that Switch 2 was designed to serve.

The test runs through August 24 with multiple four-hour windows, so there is light at the end of the tunnel — but for a portable-first platform, this login gauntlet is already a troubling sign.

The Login Screen Is the Boss Now

The test launched hot — and broke immediately. Players across Reddit reported the same frozen home screen, with the game’s logo looming like a Souls boss. FromSoftware acknowledged the login issues and asked for patience, but with slots spread across four-hour blocks through August 24, the pressure is on for future sessions.

The staggered schedule is a minor mercy; later slots could see lighter load if onlookers get discouraged. But it also means every window is a fresh restart, and for Switch 2 owners juggling family time or a commute, a failed login is a lost session, not just a lost hour.

Portable Play Meets Always-Online Friction

The Duskbloods is being positioned as a multiplayer-first FromSoftware experience, and that’s a radical shift for a studio famous for solo toil. For handheld players, the implications are heavy: this is a game that demands a stable connection at all times, which puts it at odds with the portability ethos — the same friction that makes always-online games a handheld preservation problem.

A network drop doesn’t pause or save your progress — it dumps you back at the title screen, erasing your session. That’s tolerable on a couch with a router nearby — the setup FromSoftware’s router advice imagines — but it’s a dealbreaker on a plane, in a park, or anywhere Switch 2’s portability is supposed to shine. Today’s server failure is an early warning: The Duskbloods could end up as the rare exclusive best played docked, not undocked — unless FromSoftware learns to keep the doors open.
